Among the mammals of the Brazilian fauna you can se several endangered species such as golden lion tamarin, black lion tamarin, spider monkeys, ocelot and jaguar. Some African species that can be found in Brasilia Zoo: Addax, elephant, giraffe, wildebeest, lion, oryx, among others. The 1st Brasilia zoo animal was a female Indian-Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) named "Nely". In 1956, President Kubitschek got it as a gift from the Ambassador of India. With the arrival of the pachyderm, began the construction of the Zoo, which opened a year later ... At the time, as the capital was still under construction, the zoo was the only place of entertainment and leisure for the laborers.
